Many careers can give you a sense of pride, including those in the medical industry. Those who work in healthcare get the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping people every day achieve better health and wellness. Pharmacy technician careers have become more and more popular, and for good reason. At The Praxis Institute, we offer a pharmacy technician training program that helps you prepare for life in this exciting career. Let’s look at what becoming a pharmacy tech involves.
What Is a Pharmacy Technician?
A pharmacy technician is a medical professional who works alongside a pharmacist to help care for their patients. Pharmacy techs can work in neighborhood pharmacies, pharmacies within other retail stores, hospitals and medical offices, and laboratories. They can also find work in nursing homes, military facilities, prisons, and even in veterinary clinics.
Depending on where you work as a pharmacy tech, you may have different duties. However, some of the common tasks you may be responsible for are:
- Communicating with patients to get necessary information
- Measuring out medications
- Checking the pharmacy inventory and notifying the pharmacist if a shortage is detected
- Preparing compounded medications
- Filling automatic dispensing machines
- Repackaging bulk prescription medicines
- Entering and updating patient information into computer systems
- Answering customer questions
- Setting up consultations between pharmacists and those with more in-depth concerns
