Therapist uses ultrasound massage techniques on client’s back in clinical setting

Ultrasound is a technology used for both imaging and pain relief. Massage therapists who receive training with this technology can use ultrasound to help clients recover from damage to muscles and tissues, and other strains that cause pain and downtime. The Praxis Institute offers an advanced therapeutic sports and clinical massage program in the Miami, Florida area. Students can learn a variety of advanced skills, including ultrasound massage, with the experienced teaching staff at our massage school.

What Is Ultrasound Massage?

Ultrasound massage uses technology to apply deep heating to muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. This stimulates increased blood circulation, which may help decrease pain. Delivering more heat, ultrasound devices have been found to heat tissue to a greater degree than whirlpools, paraffin baths, or silicate-gel heating methods. Students must receive thorough training on how to use these devices properly, otherwise, the therapeutic benefit may be compromised.

Ultrasound machines send an electric current through crystals located in the wand. The vibrations cause energy waves to penetrate and impact tissues beneath the skin. In this way, ultrasound can affect deep tissues with heat and leave surface skin and tissues relatively unaffected.

Ultrasound massage is a thermal type of massage. The device heats the soft tissues with vibrations via the wand. In addition to heat, the procedure also helps reduce inflammation and increase the flow of tissue fluids, such as lymph. A well-trained massage therapist also uses manual techniques and knowledge of physiology to treat pain caused by overstretching and musculoskeletal issues, along with the application of deep heat.

When Is Ultrasound Massage Recommended?

There are a variety of conditions that may benefit from the use of this advanced massage therapy. Massage therapists can work with other healthcare professionals, including physical therapists and occupational therapists, to help clients achieve healing and a reduction of pain.

Here are a few of the conditions in which ultrasound massage may help:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tendonitis
  • Tight Joints
  • Injured ligaments
  • Frozen shoulder and shoulder pain
  • Muscle spasms

What Types of Clients May Benefit from Ultrasound Massage?

Clients who are athletic and experience muscle tissue injuries while working out can benefit from ultrasound massage. It is also beneficial for overuse injuries, whether from occupational requirements, physical exertion in sports, or hobbies, such as playing musical instruments or hand sewing. Injuries that result from accidents or trauma can also be treated with ultrasound massage.
